Video evidence contradicts suspects' claim of self defense in north Columbus homicide

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Two suspects arrested in connection to a fatal stabbing in north Columbus Wednesday morning faced a judge Thursday.

According to court documents, Shavar Johnson and Courtney Webb were arraigned in Franklin County Municipal Court, stemming from the fatal stabbing of 22-year-old Amareyon Daniels.

Daniels was found after officers responded to reports of a person “down and out” at the Grant Park Apartments on North Grant Avenue in the Weinland Park neighborhood. At 7:39 a.m., medics pronounced Daniels dead after he appeared to have been stabbed.

Minutes later, police received a report of Shavar Johnson, 23, and Courtney Webb, 21, arriving at a nearby hospital, with Johnson seeking treatment for a stab wound to the hand.

Both Johnson and Webb allegedly told police that they were attacked by Daniels and that both men were injured during the fight. Webb reportedly told police that Daniels approached her in an alley and attempted to rob her at gunpoint, then threatened to rape her. Webb then said Johnson ran up to Daniels in her defense and stabbed him.

However, police said that video evidence shows Webb meeting with Daniels inside of a vehicle, before Johnson ran up to the passenger side of the vehicle, opened the door and attacked Daniels.

Webb and Johnson are from Richland County and it is unclear why they traveled to Columbus, police said.

Johnson, charged with murder, was issued a $1.5 million bond while Webb was issued a $500,000 bond on obstruction charges.
