VIDEO: Portland's Arctic fox has zoomies after recovering from salmon poisoning

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Luna, the domesticated Arctic fox found abandoned in Portland, rescued by the Bird Alliance of Oregon and transferred to a permanent home at the Ochsner Park Zoo in Baraboo, Wis., is on the mend after she was diagnosed with a serious case of salmon poisoning earlier this month.

Luna likely contracted salmon poisoning while fending for herself in the streets of Portland, the Ochsner Park Zoo said. After several weeks of treatment, Luna is almost back to full health.

“Someone feels like a whole new fox,” the zoo shared on social media this week. “After almost two weeks of antibiotics, Luna seems to feel a whole lot better. She is back outside in our quarantine exhibit, so she is visible to the public again.”

Video provided by the zoo shows Luna zipping around her pen on Wednesday after recuperating from his illness. The Zoo said that Luna is almost back to full health. Once fully recovered, Luna will be placed in an exhibit with her potential mate Apollo.

“Her vet visit showed that most of her blood levels are about 90% better, and her appetite and activity have almost returned to normal,” the Ochsner Park Zoo said. “She will remain in her quarantine area for the next few weeks while she gains more weight and grows a thicker winter coat.”

People from all around the Country donated to help pay for Luna’s added medical bills, the Ochsner Park Zoo said. A donation map provided by the zoo shows that people in Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, North Carolina and Florida all chipped in to help with Luna’s medical bills.

“A huge thank you to all the people who donated to her medical care,” the zoo said. “Because of you, we were able to fully fund all of her hospital stay and her medications.”
