Cambridge United Women (0) – QPR FC Women (4) – ‘Alana Munro Comes off the Bench to Score a Superb Hat-Trick’
FA Women’s National League One (South-East)
Team: Baravik, Cooper, Brooks, Lewin, Searle, Hennessy, Blodgett, D’Santos, Sampson, Stanley, Kennedy
On a very heavy pitch, it was the R’s who fashioned a good move down the right, which led to Chloe Sampson putting in a great cross, but the ball just evaded any contact in the box.
Then, Georgie Lewin’s low-strike from around 20-yards flashed just wide of the post.
At the other end, Abby Baravik denied the U’s No.7 with an excellent flying save.
The away side were certainly having the best of it and Jess Cooper’s low-strike was well saved by Sophie Shults.
This was followed on 20 minutes when Grace Stanley fired wide of the target.
The Rangers keeper made a superb block from the United No.38, situated around 12-yards out.
For the R’s, Jo Blodgett let fly from over 25-yards.
The U’s No.8’s shot from just outside the box, went on to come off the upright.
Approaching the interval, Jo Blodgett produced some excellent defending when she managed to successfully win the ball from behind an opponent, before laying it off. Half-time: 0-0.
I have to say that it was the home side who started the second-half the stronger of the two sides.
On 54 minutes, Danny Harrigan made two changes when he brought on Izzy Owen and Alana Munro at the expense of Meila D’Santos and Stevie Kennedy respectively.
Then, just four minutes later, Laura Hennessy made way for Ashleigh Goddard, and a few minutes after that, Renai McCrea replaced Chloe Sampson.
As the R’s upped their game, Jo Blodgett superbly chested the ball down before setting up Grace Stanley. The Rangers striker then went on to force a good save from the keeper.
Ellie Searle’s cross found Alana Munro at the far-post, but the Rangers substitute put the ball wide.
This was quickly followed by Grace Stanley’s dipping shot ending up just wide of the target.
Ashleigh Goddard forced a flying save from the keeper with a wonderful volley from Ellie Searle’s corner.
The R’s took a deserved lead on 71 minutes, when Alana Munro’s sweetly-struck shot from just outside the box flew into the net.
Rangers doubled their lead seven minutes later. After Grace Staney’s effort was initially saved, Renai McCrea was well-placed to force home the rebound.
The final change was made on 80 minutes when Alice Curr came on for Jess Copper.
On 85 minutes, Alana Munro scored her second goal of the afternoon with a tap-in at the far-post, following an assist from Grace Stanley.
An excellent interception by Izzy Owen in the Rangers box denied the U’s pulling a goal back.
Heading close to the final whistle, Alana Munro wasn’t to be denied her hat-trick. After the ball had fallen to her, she aimed her shot into the bottom-corner.
Danny Harrigan’s side then went on to face Norwich City at Loftus Road.
Thanks to Sammy for the lift.
