K9 deputy detects 12 kilos of cocaine during I-70 traffic stop

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Franklin County sheriff deputies seized a large amount of cocaine during a traffic stop west of Columbus earlier this week.

According to court records, 52-year-old Calisto Rio was arrested Monday on felony drug possession charges pertaining to drug trafficking after being pulled over on Interstate 70, just west of the Hilliard Rome Road exit.

The sheriff's office said that deputies pulled over a semi and that K9 partner Bruno alerted them to the odor of narcotics. Deputies found 12 kilograms of cocaine, and Rio, of San Juan, Texas, was taken into custody by the Specialized Tactics and Investigative Narcotics Group.

Rio was arraigned in Franklin County Municipal Court, where he was issued a $500,000 bond and ordered not to leave Ohio if he posts bail. He is next scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 19.
