Tottenham have competition for Mason Melia after he visited Hotspur Way
As the January transfer window approaches, Tottenham are planning their recruitment steps. However, they will need to act fast to secure one of their targets, Mason Melia.
Tottenham need reinforcements in January
Six players in the Tottenham squad are likely to be unavailable deep into January or longer. The fact that these injuries are clustered at centre-back and the attacking positions, means Spurs need to reinforce the squad as soon as possible.
First-team signings are required to cover the likes of Richarlison and Wilson Odobert. However, Tottenham will additionally look to continue identifying youth prospects.
This style of scouting, where teams identify prospects well before peak age, is more popular than ever. As well as finding these players, Spurs need to act fast to secure their signature.
Bologna submit a bid for Tottenham target Mason Melia
According to Football Insider, Serie A side, Bologna has submitted a £1.6m bid for Tottenham target Mason Melia.
The 17-year-old has attracted interest from clubs across Europe thanks to his performances playing for St. Patrick’s Athletic and Bologna has attempted to jump ahead of competition for his signature.
Despite Bologna’s bid, it is thought that Tottenham remain in pole position to sign Melia after he visited Hotspur Way and attended Spurs’ game against Chelsea as a guest of the club.
Spurs recruitment should be a two-pronged approach
The key phrase is Tottenham’s transfer business has been building ‘for now and the future’. Some signings, like Archie Gray, encapsulate both elements whereas Dominic Solanke and James Maddison are examples of peak-age signings.
Mason Melia is certainly more of a future-focused target. This is still highly valuable for Tottenham’s long-term squad building. It is a delicate balance, shaping the squad for the short and long term, but as long as there are resources within Tottenham to pursue both congruently, then it should place Spurs in a better position in the future.
