Portland’s historic Peacock Lane opens to pedestrians Sunday

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- The historic Peacock Lane — with homes famously showcasing holiday light displays and other festive decorations — will open its streets to pedestrians starting Sunday evening.

To ring in their 92nd year, the "Christmas Street" will kick off festivities with the pedestrian-only nights Dec. 15-16 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., allowing visitors to stroll by the homes and enjoy the decorations up close, with no vehicles allowed on the road.

Between Dec. 17-31, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., vehicles are permitted on Peacock Lane.

However, event organizers urge visitors to plan accordingly as traffic can become “quite heavy.” For those looking to avoid it, TriMet has two bus stops near Peacock Lane, including lines #15 and #75.

The festivities will also include a free hot cocoa and cider booth open Dec. 15-24 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. or until supplies run out.

The free event has been an annual tradition since 1932, with every house on the lane donning Christmas decorations.
