Ustad Zakir Hussain, the internationally renowned Tabla maestro who played a pivotal role in introducing Indian classical music to the world, passed away on Sunday in San Francisco. He was 73 years old.
His family confirmed that he had been suffering from a pulmonary disease and passed away in a hospital in San Francisco, USA. During the golden years of his career, Zakir Hussain received India’s highest national award for his outstanding contribution to music.
Zakir Hussain was a composer, classical music maestro, and actor, widely regarded as one of the greatest tabla players of his time. He gained international acclaim for his mastery of the tabla, the traditional Indian percussion instrument.
