Alvaro Fernandez on Manchester United’s Radar
Manchester United have emerged as rumoured suitors for Benfica defender Alvaro Fernandez.
The Red Devils reportedly eyes a January move for their former youth player. Now excelling at Benfica, Fernandez has caught United scouts’ attention, particularly after a standout performance against Bologna in the Champions League.
The 21-year-old left-back was once a promising member of United’s U-21 team but left for Portugal in search of first-team opportunities.
His development at Benfica has been remarkable, earning him a pivotal role in their squad. Fernandez’s potential return could address United’s ongoing issues in the left-back position, with Tyrell Malacia only recently recovering from injury and Luke Shaw still sidelined.
Manchester United’s interest is buoyed by a favourable clause that could allow them to secure Fernandez for just £16.5 million, a fraction of his £42 million release clause. However, much depends on manager Ruben Amorim’s evaluation of the player’s fit in the current setup.
With Liverpool also reportedly monitoring Fernandez, United may need to act swiftly to re-sign the Spaniard. Fernandez himself harbours ambitions of playing for Real Madrid, but a return to Old Trafford remains an intriguing possibility as the January transfer window approaches.
