Eunice man killed in Friday hit-and-run, suspect arrested
EUNICE, La. (KLFY) -- A Eunice man was killed in a suspected hit-and-run Friday evening, authorities said.
Darius Edwards, 25, of Eunice, was hit by a vehicle while riding an electric motorized scooter on S. Aymond Street, according to Eunice Police.
Kevin Jermaine Thomas Sr., 49, of Eunice, has been charged with negligent homicide, hit and run with death or serious bodily injury), driving while license suspended and passing in a no passing zone in connection with the crash.
Eunice Police were dispatched at approximately 5:30 p.m. Friday to the area of S. Aymond Street in reference to a vehicle and pedestrian accident. Officers observed a male victim, later identified as Edwards, lying on the roadway unresponsive with bystanders performing CPR.
Officers took over life saving measures until Eunice Fire Department and EMS medics arrived. Edwards was then taken to a local hospital where he died.
Witnesses said the vehicle that struck Edwards was a gray SUV that was traveling southbound passing vehicles in the center turn lane at a high rate of speed. Witnesses said Edwards was traveling northbound in the center turn lane when the gray vehicle struck Edwards.
The vehicle then stopped for 10-15 seconds before fleeing the scene continuing southbound on S. Aymond, officials said.
The vehicle and driver were later located, and the driver was taken into custody.
Bond details for Thomas were not released.
