Reboot of huge noughties drama gets major update – a year after return was confirmed
THE reboot of a huge noughties drama gets a new major update after its return was confirmed just a year ago.
A pilot episode for the new spin off has been ordered by Hulu, seven years after the last episode aired.
Hulu has ordered a pilot of the new spin off show[/caption] The stars of Prison Break will not be returning for the new show[/caption] The original series centred around two brothers[/caption]The fan favourite Prison Break is an American crime drama which aired on FOX from 2005 to 2009.
And now fans are delighted that after almost 20 years, Prison Break is returning to our screens with a reboot.
However, viewers might be disappointed as the original stars will not be returning for the new spin off.
Instead, the new series will exist in the same universe as the original prison drama but will focus on a new batch of prison inmates.
And a different set of actors are expected to take the show forward in the future reports Variety.
Show creator Paul Scheuring returns to executive produce the series alongside Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein, Neil Moritz and Elgin James.
The original show revolves around two brothers: Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) and Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller).
In the first season, Lincoln has been sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit, while Michael devises an elaborate plan to help his brother escape prison and clear his name.
The show was praised by critics and audiences and was nominated for several industry awards.
Including the 2005 Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series Drama and the 2006 People’s Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama, which it won.
Its success also spawned a TV movie, “The Final Break,” and a low-budget spinoff, “Prison Break: Proof of Innocence,” which was exclusively available on mobile phones.
It also inspired a video game, online webisodes, a magazine and a novel.
Back in November 2020, the show’s creator Paul Scheuring revealed it would take a new writer to prolong the original show beyond the current fifth series as he’s out of ideas.
Speaking to Collider, he revealed: “I couldn’t tell you another story about this group of people.
“Maybe somebody else can, or by accident, I’ll somehow, possibly, dream up another prison escape that’s new and fresh, but I would bet against it.
“You can only be open for business, if it’s worth being open for business. Your product has to be worthwhile.
“Until I, or someone else, can come up with something that’s really worthwhile for the audience, you have to say goodbye to these people.’
“At the end, you’ll be like, ‘That was the dynamic. That’s what happened.
“And that’s how it was resolved. Wow!’ There’s no over-hanging piece that will make you want to come back next year.”
The new series will be set in the same universe as Prison Break but with a new set of characters to follow[/caption]Prison Break is available on Amazon Prime Video, and seasons 1-5 are also available on Blu-ray and DVD.
