Liverpool’s vibrant nightlife earns international recognition

Liverpool City Council welcomed members of the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) last week for a special visit. 

The IFEA looks to unite festival and events professionals across the globe, offering a centralised space for research and discussions about the events industry. 

Delegates from the Asia branch of the association landed in Liverpool on Friday as part of a tourism study tour. The branch specifically chose the City due to its long-running Purple Flag status.

A Purple Flag is awarded to towns and cities that have an innovative and safe nightlife, similar to Green Flags awarded for exceptional parks and Blue Flags given to beaches. 

In February, Liverpool secured Purple Flag status once more, making it 14 years in a row that the City has been recognised for its night-time economy. The report highlighted the success of last year’s Eurovision, as well as the quality of the City’s bars, restaurants, shops and transport links.  

While in the city, 30 regional leaders and CEOs from South Korea met with members of Liverpool City Council including the Leader of the Council and staff from Culture Liverpool and Marketing Liverpool.

Cllr Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, said: “A lot of hard work goes into retaining our purple flag status each year. We work closely with local businesses and public agencies to make sure our streets remain safe and inviting for residents and visitors.

“Our night-time economy is something we’re incredibly proud of here in Liverpool, so to be able to showcase that for our international guests was fantastic. I hope that we were able to provide some guidance and insight into maintaining a strong nightlife that they can use in future projects across Asia.”
