US Islamic Group CAIR Accuses Israel of ‘Ethnic Cleansing’ — in Syria

The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) has accused Israel of committing “ethnic cleansing” in Syria following the recent collapse of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad’s regime, despite the limited nature of Israel’s military operations in the neighboring country.

“The criminal Israeli government’s war of ethnic cleansing in Gaza has now spread to occupied Syrian territory, where [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s fighters are destroying water networks and electrical towers to force Syrians out of their homes,” CAIR said in a statement on Sunday. “The Biden administration must stop enabling this radical regime’s campaign of chaos, killing, and destruction. Syrians must be able to rebuild their nation, free from Israeli occupation.”

CAIR accused Israel of staging an “invasion” into the Quneitra governorate of southwestern Syria, located near Israel’s northeastern border, claiming that Israeli forces caused extensive damage to the area in an attempt to displace Syrian civilians and steal their land.

Amid uncertainty about the future of Syria following Assad’s collapse earlier this month, Israeli officials said the military deployed troops to a buffer zone along the Syrian border to prevent terrorists from launching attacks against Israel.

The leading Syrian rebel faction, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which spearheaded the lightning campaign that ousted Assad earlier this month and ended his family’s five-decade authoritarian rule, was formerly allied with Al Qaeda and remains a designated terrorist organization by the US, European Union, Turkey, and the UN.

After Assad fell, Israel took full control over the once-demilitarized buffer zone in the Golan Heights, which was established under the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement between Damascus and Jerusalem that ended the Yom Kippur War. Israeli forces also established a temporary demilitarized “defensive zone” beyond the buffer zone in southern Syria to prevent terrorist threats.

Israel has denied claims that it has gone beyond these areas further into Syria. Netanyahu said last week that Israel has no intention of interfering in Syria’s internal affairs and that its military presence is temporary to prevent terrorist threats “until a force that is committed to the 1974 agreement can be established and security on our border can be guaranteed.”

Netanyahu echoed that point on Tuesday while giving remarks during a meeting with senior Israeli officials on the summit of Mt. Hermon, a strategic location overlooking the Syrian capital of Damascus, saying the military will remain there “until another arrangement is found that ensures Israel’s security.”

HTS leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, who previously went by his better known nom de guerre Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, told The Times, a British outlet, in a new interview that he will not allow Syria to be used as a “launchpad” for attacks against Israel or any other state. He also called on Israel to withdraw from the buffer zone between the countries and cease all military operations in Syria, where since Assad’s fall the Jewish state has conducted hundreds of strikes eliminating much of Syria’s strategic weapons arsenal with the aim of preventing it from falling into the hands of Islamic terrorists.

“Israel’s justification was the presence of Hezbollah and Iranian militias, so that justification is gone,” Sharaa said.

“We are committed to the 1974 agreement and we are prepared to return the UN [monitors],” he continued. “We do not want any conflict whether with Israel or anyone else and we will not let Syria be used as a launchpad for attacks. The Syrian people need a break, and the strikes must end and Israel has to pull back to its previous positions.”

Sharaa also called for the international community to lift sanctions on Syria, saying that the country is “geopolitically important” and pointing out that Assad is no longer in power.

Assad, who has been accused of war crimes during his crackdown on rebel forces since 2011, was a partner of Russia and allied with Iran, which for years has used Syrian territory to send weapons to its terrorist proxy Hezbollah in Lebanon to be used against Israel.

CAIR’s latest accusation against Israel was not its first time stepping into controversy. In the 2000s, the organization was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing casePolitico noted in 2010 that “US District Court Judge Jorge Solis found that the government presented ‘ample evidence to establish the association'” of CAIR with the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas.

According to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), “some of CAIR’s current leadership had early connections with organizations that are or were affiliated with Hamas.” CAIR has disputed the accuracy of the ADL’s claim and asserted that it “unequivocally condemn[s] all acts of terrorism, whether carried out by al-Qa’ida, the Real IRA, FARC, Hamas, ETA, or any other group designated by the US Department of State as a ‘Foreign Terrorist Organization.'”

CAIR leaders have also found themselves embroiled in further controversy since Hamas’s massacre across southern Israel last Oct. 7.

The head of CAIR, for example, said he was “happy” to witness Hamas’s rampage of rape, murder, and kidnapping of Israelis in what was the largest single-day slaughter of Jews since the Holocaust.

“The people of Gaza only decided to break the siege — the walls of the concentration camp — on Oct. 7,” CAIR co-founder and executive director Nihad Awad said in a speech during the American Muslims for Palestine convention in Chicago last November. “And yes, I was happy to see people breaking the siege and throwing down the shackles of their own land, and walk free into their land, which they were not allowed to walk in.”
