Vermilion Parish jail inmate dies, foul play not suspected
ABBEVILLE, La. (KLFY) -- An inmate in the Vermilion Parish Jail died early this morning, authorities said.
Mitchel Bertrand, 53, of Abbeville, died as the result of what the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office called a "medical emergency."
Authorites said an inmate notified correctional deputies just before 3 a.m. Tuesday that Bertrand was having medical issues in his cell, where he was found unresponsive and not breathing. After deputies and paramedics performed life-saving measures, Bertrand was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:42 a.m.
After reviewing video footage, investigators said they do not suspect foul play.
The cause of death was not immediately known.
