Webb County renames courthouse after Senator Judith Zaffirini

WEBB COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — The Webb County Courthouse was recently renamed to honor area native Texas Sen. Judith Zaffirini. In doing so, it became the first local courthouse in Texas named after a woman, according to Zaffirini's office.

The courthouse, which is located in Laredo, was officially renamed the Dean Senator Judith Zaffirini Justice Center at a dedication on Dec. 10 after the Webb County judge and Commissioners Court members voted unanimously in February to rename the courthouse, according to a release from the senator's office.

That was shortly after Zaffirini made history by becoming the first woman Dean of the Texas Senate at the start of the year.

“My name may be on the building, but it represents the hundreds of judges, attorneys, advocates, staff and others who have collaborated over the years to enhance access to justice for all," Zaffirini said.

Zaffirini is the namesake of the student success center at Texas A&M International University; an elementary school, library, park, road and a soccer mini-pitch in Laredo; a patient suite at the UT Dell Seton Medical Center; four endowed scholarships; and two grant programs, per the release.
