'Everybody wants to look at it': Hegseth FBI file in high demand as questions grow

There is a growing demand outside of normal channels within the U.S. Senate among lawmakers who want access to the file compiled on Donald Trump's choice to be the secretary of defense.

According to a report from Politico's Joe Gould, under normal circumstances the investigation materials on ex-Fox News personality Pete Hegseth would only be viewed by the two most senior members of the Senate Armed Forces Committee.

In Hegseth's case, reports suggest allegations of public drunkenness and accusations of sexual assault that have cast a cloud over his nomination have made his file a must-read among senators who will decide his fate.

The report notes that a wide swath of both Democrats and Republicans are demanding to pore over any and all information on the man who would oversee the Pentagon.

“It would be helpful, given the allegations that have been lodged against Mr. Hegseth, to be able to see the FBI background check,” stated Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) with Senate Armed Forces Chair Jack Reed (D-RI) admitting, "Everybody wants to look at it.” He said, “That’s a decision that has to be made by myself, Sen. [Roger] Wicker (R-MS) and the White House.”

Politico is reporting that one of the embattled Hegseth's biggest boosters, Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), is balking at the idea of the report being passed around.

“I don’t think we need to make any special exceptions on any of this,” he complained “If we didn’t do it for the Biden administration, we shouldn’t do it for the Trump administration.”
