The Mets had been interested in the right-hander, according to a report earlier this week by Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated.

Canning was traded earlier this offseason to the Braves after spending his entire career with the Angels. After acquiring him for Jorge Soler, Atlanta decided not to tender him a contract for 2025.

Canning took the mound for parts of five seasons for the Halos, making 94 starts, pitching to a 25-34 record with a 4.78 ERA. His largest workload came just last season when Canning threw 171.2 innings, but he gave up a league-leading 99 earned runs and 31 homers. Canning’s 5.19 ERA was the third-worst mark among qualified starters in 2024. He also registered just a 17.6% strikeout rate, down from a career-high 25.9% in 2023.

Canning’s deal with the Mets includes $1 million in potential bonuses.
