Blinken: Trump can prevent Iran’s Nuclear ambitions through negotiations

Antony Blinken, the U.S. Secretary of State, emphasized that Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons is not inevitable, adding that Donald Trump, the U.S. President-elect, has an opportunity to negotiate with Tehran.

According to France 24 on Wednesday, December 18, Blinken believes that after multiple military setbacks in the region, Iran may become more determined to develop nuclear weapons.

He noted that actions such as Israeli strikes on Iranian military bases, the weakening of Iran’s proxy groups in the Middle East, and the fall of Assad’s regime in Syria could push Tehran to intensify its nuclear ambitions.

Blinken stated that with the loss of various defensive positions in the region, Tehran is likely to reconsider its nuclear strategy.

The Secretary of State acknowledged that Iran is well aware of the consequences of pursuing nuclear weapons but reiterated that there is room for negotiation.

Blinken stressed that no U.S. administration wants Iran to develop nuclear weapons and confirmed that the new government will continue this policy.

Trump’s first term as President demonstrated his strict stance toward Tehran. In early 2016, he withdrew the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal and subsequently imposed extensive sanctions on the country.

The possibility of negotiations under the new U.S. administration presents a critical opportunity to address tensions with Iran. Constructive dialogue could potentially steer Tehran away from nuclear ambitions and bring stability to the region.

However, without clear diplomatic efforts and trust-building measures, the risk of escalation remains high, further endangering regional and global security.
