Djed Spence has struggled at Spurs

Life has not been easy for Djed Spence since he made the move from Middlesbrough to Tottenham. Not only has he been loaned out three times, but questions over his attitude have been raised by two of his former managers.

Despite impressing in Tottenham’s pre-season fixtures and scoring an important goal in the Carabao Cup against Coventry City back in September, Spence has mostly been an unused substitute this season.

But with Pedro Porro facing criticism for his performances, Postecoglou made the decision to rest him against Southampton in last Sunday’s Premier League clash and give Spence his first competitive start for Spurs.

Spence took his opportunity in Tottenham’s 5-0 triumph at St Mary’s Stadium, getting an assist for their opening goal, which was scored in the first minute by James Maddison. He also created another big chance and played 95 per cent of his passes accurately.

Ange Postecoglou is full of praise for Djed Spence

During his press conference ahead of Tottenham’s League Cup quarter-final match against Ruben Amorin’s Manchester United, Ange Postecoglou recognised Spence’s solid performance in their last outing.

Asked whether Spence would play a few more games after he played so well against Southampton, Postecouglou said (FootballLondon): “Djed was outstanding the other night. I said, credit to the coaches who have put the work into him.

“It wasn’t just about him filling a spot, he actually made an impact. Good on the night and he obviously got tired in the second half, understandably so.

“Again, great for us to have an established player come in, It felt really good he could contribute.”

Djed Spence needs to start more matches for Tottenham

Postecoglou has refused to give away whether he intends to play Spence more going forward, but with Porro underperforming, there is no good reason why he should not be given further chances.

Every time he has been called on he has looked good and at 24 years old, he cannot afford to be sitting on the Spurs bench all season if he is to progress in his career.
