The motor then hit a tree in Grove Lane, Handsworth, just after 2am on Thursday killing two of the passengers.

Three other teenagers who were also in the car have been taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

The 17-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, with cops saying “nothing could be done to save him”.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has begun an investigation into the incident.

Police have asked anyone who was in the area at the time of the collision to contact them via 101 or Live Chat quoting log number 183 of December 19.

Cops had put in a cordon while they carried out their investigations.

They said: “A4040 Church Lane in both directions re-opened, traffic returned to normal, earlier accident investigation work from Slack Lane to Rosedene Drive.

“The roundabout was completely impassable closing all roads approaching the roundabout earlier.”
