DEC investigating reported malfunction at Selkirk SABIC facility
SELKIRK, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The state Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating reports of unpleasant odors near the SABIC plastic fabrication facility in Selkirk. Officials stated there is no immediate threat to public health or the environment.
On Monday around 7 p.m., a malfunction reportedly occurred at the facility resulting in the accidental release of about 1,100 pounds of the chemical compound 2,6-Xylenol. The liquid release was confined and quickly solidified, officials reported.
SABIC is actively collecting the waste for proper disposal. The DEC continues to investigate the cause of the malfunction alongside SABIC while working with the company to help prevent future accidents by implementing corrective actions and guaranteeing all environmental regulations are complied with.
