US Mint unveils design for Ida B. Wells, Althea Gibson quarters

The U.S. Mint has unveiled designs for quarters featuring important women in history, including journalist Ida B. Wells and tennis player Althea Gibson.

The designs are part of the final series of the American Women Quarters Program, according to a Wednesday press release.

The American Women Quarters Program, which will span four years, includes “coins with reverse (tails) designs emblematic of the accomplishments and contributions of trailblazing American women.”

Five quarters have come out from the U.S. Mint each year in the program that started in 2022, the release said.

The five women honored by next year’s quarters also include Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low, astronomer Vera Rubin and activist Stacey Park Milbern.

“This program has recognized the remarkable legacies of these extraordinary she-roes,” U.S. Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson said. “These beautiful American Women quarters will be in circulation for decades to come and continue to educate the American people on our incredible honorees.”
