Austin FC opens 2025 MLS season at home Feb. 22, hosts all-star game July 23

AUSTIN (KXAN) — With a new coach and the league's spotlight in the middle of the season, Austin FC hopes 2025 will bring different results than last season.

Austin FC will host the MLS All-Star Game on July 23 and kick off its 2025 season under new manager Nico Estevez at home Feb. 22 against Sporting Kansas City. Verde and Black will play 28 of its 36 matches against Western Conference opponents, a home-and-home series versus all 14 members, plus six matches against Eastern Conference opponents.

The end of the regular season, known as Decision Day when postseason matchups are finalized, is Oct. 18. Austin is on the road in San Jose to take on the Earthquakes at Paypal Park.

There's also no break in the schedule for Leagues Cup in 2025. The tournament will be played concurrently with the regular season from July 29-August 31. The schedule and format will be announced after the new year, tournament organizers said. There's a built-in break for the FIFA Club World Cup and CONCACAF Gold Cup from June 15-24. Inter Miami CF and the Seattle Sounders are competing in the Club World Cup.

It was a disappointing 2024 for Austin FC which led to the dismissal of Josh Wolff, the club's head coach since coming into the league in 2021. The club finished 10th in the Western Conference with 42 points (11-14-9), five points outside of making the postseason, a minus-9 goal differential and a dismal 4-9-4 record away from Q2 Stadium.

Austin has the No. 12 overall pick in Friday's MLS SuperDraft. San Diego FC joins MLS this season and visit Q2 Stadium on March 23 with Verde and Black's return trip May 31.
