The Cops Gave Luigi Mangione Another Photo Op

After ten days at a Pennsylvania prison, Luigi Mangione was extradited to New York on Thursday to face first-degree murder charges in connection with the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He was escorted out of a courthouse in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, and into a black police vehicle Thursday morning. A few hours later, he emerged on a helipad in southern Manhattan amid a sea of NYPD officers — and, for some reason, Eric Adams — before being transported to a federal courthouse. It’s unclear why Mangione was perp-walked from the helicopter to a nearby van in such dramatic fashion, but the result was surely not what authorities intended: a bunch of photos that have made some people more interested in Mangione’s skin-care routine than the evidence against him.

On top of several gun and forgery charges in Pennsylvania, Mangione is facing three murder charges in New York, including a first-degree count for terrorism that carries a maximum penalty of life in prison without parole. He’s being defended by high-powered attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo, a longtime New York lawyer who spent 15 years working for the Manhattan DA’s office. (She’s also married to the guy defending Diddy from federal sex-trafficking charges. Small world, I guess?)

In the week and a half since he was arrested after being spotted at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, a flurry of fandom has emerged around Mangione.  The cops may have thought an extended handcuffed photo op would embarrass Mangione, but they didn’t account for the fact that this man clearly knows his angles.
