Syrians protest in Damascus for democracy and women’s rights

Hundreds of Syrian citizens took part in protests in Damascus, calling for the establishment of secularism, democracy, and women’s rights in the country. Both men and women at the gathering chanted slogans such as “We want democracy, not a religious government,” “A free and civil Syria,” and “The Syrian nation is one.”

According to a report by Agence France-Presse on Thursday, some of the demonstrators carried placards with the message: “There is no free nation without free women.”

Opposition groups to Bashar al-Assad, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, were able to end five decades of the Assad family’s rule over Syria with their capture of Damascus on December 8.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which was once considered an offshoot of Al-Qaeda, is still classified as a terrorist group by some Western countries.

However, recently, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham leaders, particularly Ahmad al-Shara, also known as Abu Muhammad al-Jolani, have attempted to moderate their stance and provide assurances regarding the protection of the rights of ethnic and religious minorities in Syria.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham has appointed a temporary government to manage affairs in Syria, which is set to operate until March 11.

On Thursday, December 19, UN Secretary-General António Guterres also stated that after Assad’s fall, a “spark of hope” has emerged in Syria, but significant challenges lie ahead.

He added, “The Middle East is burning with many fires, but today, in Syria, a flame of hope is shining, and this flame must not be extinguished.”

Meanwhile Syria faces immense challenges ahead, the growing calls for secularism, democracy, and women’s rights signify a shift in the national consciousness. The recent demonstrations reflect a desire for a more inclusive and equitable society.

As the situation unfolds, it is crucial for the international community to support these efforts and ensure that the flame of hope remains alive, guiding Syria toward a peaceful and democratic future.
