Blackman ‘a voice for the voiceless’

Walter Blackman never realised his boyhood dream of becoming Prime Minister of Barbados, but there could be little doubt of the profound impression he left on a cross section of Barbadians, according to tributes delivered at his funeral service yesterday.

The late actuary, talk show host, political aspirant and Combermere alumnus was praised by friends, colleagues, business associates and family for his commitment to the things in which he believed and his mission to be of service.

“Walter was about seeking to serve those who need service the most. Ethos will be my remembrances of Walter, a man who was never afraid to speak for the down-trodden,” said his friend Dr Monrelle Williams, whom Blackman had specially requested to deliver the sermon.

Williams preached to a congregation at St Peter’s Parish Church that included Leader of the Opposition Ralph Thorne, stalwarts and other prominent members of the Democratic labour Party.
