It’s not a little town called Virgin River without drama, misunderstandings, and even a feud.

And Virgin River Season 6 gives us a pretty big one as we instantly realize that Mel’s biological father and Doc, who has become her father figure since she relocated there, don’t get along.

Doc and Everett’s tension is so thick that one could cut through it with a scalpel, but it took a minute to figure out what was really at the source of that tension.

Doc and Everett’s Feud Predates Mel’s Arrival

Initially, it seemed like Mel herself was the source of the tension between them.

Mel assumed that there was some form of friction and maybe jealousy underlying the behavior of both men.

Doc has been Mel’s primary paternal figure since she stepped foot in Virgin River after having a rocky start. Over the years, their relationship has blossomed into something meaningful and special.

For years, Doc didn’t know he had children of his own, so he and Mel developed a well-earned kinship that made him view her as a daughter.

She even asked him to walk her down the aisle when she agreed to marry Jack, which was the highest honor she could have bestowed upon him.

Meanwhile, Mel didn’t meet Everett until the Virgin River Holiday Event after discovering that her father had been in Virgin River the entire time.

And she’s spent much of Virgin River Season 6 getting to know him and attempting to make up for lost time. Mel was overzealous about it, too, which would’ve given anyone the impression that the two men were overwhelmed by her strong feelings about them.

But Mel quickly learns, through comments and reactions from the Sewing Circle and others, that the tension between the men predates her arrival.

Exacerbating the rivarly and some of the drama between these two men was the fact that, in another significant gesture to get to know her birth father better, she asked him to walk her down the aisle and perform the song that he wrote for her mother at the wedding.

Unfortunately for Doc, it sidelined him, and she instead switched him over from walking her down the aisle to reading at the wedding, which severely hurt his feelings.

Doc wanted Mel to be happy, so there was no way he’d resist, but it obviously hurt his feelings and cut him to the core.

It also did nothing but build up his resentment and other issues against Everett, especially since he’s been insistent that Everett would cause Mel nothing but hurt.

Everett appears to have some health concerns throughout the season. His coughing immediately captures Mel’s attention, and it is one of the first times she goes to his cabin to see him.

But he actively refuses to go to the clinic and seek a check-up or basic medical care from Doc.

Mel puts her foot down when Everett gets ill and she has to take a begrudging Everett to see Doc for a checkup.

Once there, Doc remains professional, but having the men in the same room is still difficult.

Everett makes the endearing gesture of bringing Mel to the place where her mother used to love coming to, Virgin River, and where her mother planted a bunch of wildflowers.

It was a nice bonding adventure for the father and daughter as they got to know one another.

However, they happened across an accident where a rock slide endangered the lives of multiple people in vehicles, including the couple and pregnant woman Mel had been taking care of at the birthing center.

Mel put Everett into action with her as he helped her with tourniquets and calmed a woman trapped in her car. He even managed to bond with the sweet woman over love for chocolate and other such matters.

But when Doc showed up at the scene, he was livid that Everett was there and insisted that he was nothing more than a distraction and another hazard getting in the way of him and the firefighters doing their jobs to help everyone.

It was another tense interaction between the two, which left everyone wondering what was causing their problem.

Doc Blames Everett for Jordan’s Death

We finally got to the root of the tension between these two during Vigin River Season 6 Episode 8.

Doc goes to visit the gravesite of a former young patient of his who tragically passed away in 1999. We learn that Jordan’s death haunts Doc because he passed away when Doc was far away from him.

In many ways, Doc blames himself because he wasn’t there in Jordan’s last moments to help him or potentially save him, although he probably would’ve been unable to do so.

However, Doc wasn’t at Jordan’s bedside because he had to respond to another emergency: Everett crashing his car.

For years, Doc believed that Everett got drunk one night and went on a joyride, crashing his car into a tree, and endangered not only the lives of everyone around him but himself.

Everett told Doc to let him die when Doc saved him. And it only added to Doc’s anger that Everett wanted to die when a young boy actually did while Doc was away.

Everett handles Doc’s accusations and bitterness incredibly well as they stand at Jordan’s gravesite. He astutely points out that it’s not him, Doc, who has to forgive but himself.

But Everett also shares the truth of what happened that night.

He didn’t go “joyriding” recklessly as Doc thought. Instead, it was around the time that Sarah, Mel’s mother and the love of his life, had died.

He also reached out to Mel’s father in hopes of forming a relationship with his daughter, but Mel’s other father declined, citing that it would be too confusing and stressful for her in the immediate aftermath of losing her mother already.

Everett’s last bit of hope was gone, and he deliberately went drinking and drove himself into a tree because he didn’t feel he had anything left in his life.

His car crash was a cry for help and a moment when he was clearly in crisis. Essentially, young Jordan lost his life, but Doc truly did save another without knowing the full extent of how.

The two made peace with one another after that, especially as Everett thanked Doc for saving his life so he could see and spend time with his daughter.

He also thanked him for looking after Mel since she’s been in Virgin River, and they had a quiet understanding as two father figures who love Mel to pieces.

They effectively squashed the feud.
