2024 Review: A Year of Growth and Achievement for the Trans Pennine Trail 

As we close the chapter on 2024, it’s time to reflect on a year of incredible progress, collaboration, and shared achievements for the Trans Pennine Trail (TPT). From new developments and improvements along the route to the continued dedication of our community groups, volunteers, partners, and supporters, 2024 has been a year of growth and connection for our beloved Trail. 

In this blog, we’ll highlight some of the key accomplishments and milestones from this year, as outlined in the Trans Pennine Trail Annual Report 2024. Thanks to the collective efforts of everyone involved, the TPT is more accessible, more vibrant, and more impactful than ever. 

Increased Engagement: We saw an increase in the engagement of our online platforms, with more followers on social media and increased visits to the TPT website. It’s heartening to see how people are using these platforms to share their experiences, access resources, and learn more about what the TPT offers. We are proud of the growing sense of community among those who follow and support the Trail, whether locally or globally. And if you don’t already, why not follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

Enhancing Trail Accessibility, Improvements and Upgrades: A major focus in 2024 was on improving the accessibility of the TPT, ensuring that it remains open and welcoming to everyone, regardless of ability. This year, several sections of the Trail received important upgrades, including new signage, surface improvements, and safer crossings for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders. These upgrades have been vital in making the TPT a more inclusive and user-friendly space for all.  Thanks to our Local Authority partners and Sustrans for all the funding that was secured to enable this work. 

Our partnership with local councils and organisations has been instrumental in securing funding for these developments, and we’re thrilled to report that many sections of the Trail are now even better connected and accessible than before. 

Updates to the TPT Website: In 2024, we’ve made significant updates to the Trans Pennine Trail website to better serve our community and enhance the user experience. These new features are designed to make the Trail more interactive and accessible for everyone, whether you’re a long-time supporter or a newcomer to the TPT. 

One of the most exciting additions is the introduction of the Stamping Scheme, which encourages Trail users to visit multiple locations along the route. By collecting stamps at various trailheads and landmarks, participants can earn rewards and certificates as they complete sections of the Trail. This scheme has been a hit with walkers, cyclists, and families, offering both a fun challenge and a way to explore new parts of the Trail. 

We’ve also rolled out a revised User Code on the website, which provides essential guidelines for responsible Trail use. The code encourages everyone to respect nature, fellow Trail users, and local communities. It includes tips on litter reduction and how to enjoy the Trail while protecting the environment and respecting others. We hope this will foster a greater sense of responsibility and shared ownership among all who use the Trail. 

In response to the growing number of people who want to support the Trail in a more formal way, we’ve revamped the Friends Section of the website. Here, individuals and groups can learn more about how to get involved, whether through volunteering, fundraising, or becoming a Friend of the TPT. This section also highlights the impact that our supporters have on the Trail, sharing stories and testimonials from those who have helped maintain, promote, and fund the Trail’s growth. We’ve also introduced a new online donation platform, making it easier than ever for supporters to contribute to the ongoing development of the Trail. 

Continued Success of Our Volunteer and Community Groups: Our incredible network of volunteers and community groups has continued to play a central role in maintaining and enhancing the TPT in 2024. From regular litter-picking events to the ongoing maintenance of sections of the Trail, our volunteers are the heart and soul of the TPT. 

Several community-led projects and events took place this year, from guided walks and fundraising activities to new initiatives aimed at connecting local people with the Trail. These efforts are helping to foster a sense of pride and ownership in the Trail, ensuring that it remains a thriving, community-supported asset. 

Financial Support and New Partnerships: 2024 was also a year of securing vital funding to support the continued development and sustainability of the TPT. Through a combination of grants, partnerships, and fundraising efforts, we’ve been able to fund several key projects that will have lasting impacts on the Trail for years to come. 

Our partnership with Local Authorities, businesses, and environmental organisations has been crucial in helping us meet our goals. Together, we’ve worked on improving the Trail’s infrastructure, enhancing its environmental sustainability, and promoting it as a key destination for outdoor recreation. 

What’s Next for the TPT? While 2024 has been an exceptional year, the future is even more exciting. Looking ahead to 2025, we are planning further improvements to the Trail, including more surface upgrades, better signage, and new partnerships to increase the Trail’s visibility and use. 

We also look forward to launching our Digital Trails and Take a Seat initiatives, and we’re hopeful that more of you will get involved by contributing content about your local section of the Trail. There’s so much potential to continue growing and improving the TPT, and we are excited to work together with all of you to make this vision a reality. 

As we close out 2024, we want to thank everyone who has supported the Trans Pennine Trail in any way – from volunteers and community groups to our partners, funders, and trail users. Your dedication, hard work, and enthusiasm are what make the TPT such a special and unique place.
