What Astros’ Reported ‘Advanced Talks’ Could Mean For Red Sox

The Astros reportedly were nearing a deal with a free agent first baseman Friday, which could bode well for the Boston Red Sox.

Houston was in “advanced talks” with Christian Walker on a contract, according to Robert Murray of FanSided. The Athletic’s Chandler Rome and Ken Rosenthal reported the sides were in “serious talks and progressing toward a deal,” so it seems like the Astros are committed to Walker.

The Red Sox are not in the market for a first baseman, but they should be delighted if Houston locks up Walker. The American League West side made it clear with their Kyle Tucker trade that they want to reduce payroll. Signing Walker seemingly takes the Astros out of the Alex Bregman market, and they’re apparently comfortable with Isaac Paredes replacing him at third base.

It also means Houston won’t be circling back on a Nolan Arenado trade. That means Boston still has a chance at either Bregman or Arenado. The Red Sox reportedly were “more of a possibility” to land Bregman than the New York Yankees, so there’s a good chance the sides could agree on a deal. Arenado reportedly would waive his no-trade clause to join Alex Cora’s side, and a deal could happen depending on how desperate the St. Louis Cardinals are to trade away their star.

The Astros signing Walker also would hurt the Mariners, who reportedly had a high interest in the three-time Gold Glove infielder. Boston reportedly was engaged in trade talks with Seattle and the loss of a free agent option might make it more willing to part with a pitcher like Luis Castillo if it desperately wants another power bat for the lineup.

While Walker is a fine first baseman, his signing could have big ramifications on the market.
