Tottenham will be buoyed by recent wins

A week is a long time in football. A resounding win against Southampton and successfully advancing to the Carabao Cup Semi-finals will have improved the mood around Hotspur Way.

Tottenham have struggled for form and fitness throughout December. However, having now scored 9 goals in two games, the team will have been reminded that their hard work and attacking intent can reap rewards.

The visit of Liverpool presents another significant challenge in a relentless schedule for Spurs. Tottenham look to benefit from players returning from injury and suspension in the coming weeks. If they can get through this Liverpool test, they could find some winning form which could take them into the second half of the season.

Chris Sutton predicts Tottenham vs Liverpool

Chris Sutton has predicted the score in the Spurs vs Liverpool match. In his BBC Sport Column, Sutton said “It is going to be a brilliant game. There are going to be fireworks just because of the way that Tottenham play, and Liverpool are phenomenal on the counter-attack.

“Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou said this week that management is a harder job than being prime minister and, from my spell in charge of Lincoln, I can testify to that.

“Postecoglou knows all about the highs and lows that managers can experience from one week to the next, because that has been the story of Spurs’ season.

“The same might apply just to this game too. While I think Tottenham will get some joy because it is going to be action packed, Liverpool will not lie down and I fancy them to come out on top.

“How Spurs deal with Mohamed Salah on the counter-attack is going to be key, but I cannot see them stopping him completely.”

Stopping Salah is Spurs’ main task

Sutton is right that Mohamed Salah is Liverpool’s main threat. Liverpool have scored 31 goals in the Premier League and Salah has been involved in 22 of them.

While Spurs would certainly be boosted by Destiny Udogie being available for the match, they also benefit from the current form and confidence of Djed Spence.

Potentially having a left-back whose favoured foot matches Salah’s, could make it harder for the Liverpool forward to cut inside. A result will depend on a whole team performance, but the first step will be attempting to nullify Liverpool’s primary threat.
