Morning Briefing: Two More Free-Agent First Basemen Off the Board

According to YES Network’s Jack Curry, the Yankees have signed first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to a one-year deal. In 599 at-bats last season, the 2022 MVP slashed only .245/.302/.414/.716.

Jeff Passan of ESPN also reported first baseman Carlos Santana and the Guardians are in agreement on a one-year, $12 million contract, pending physical. Over 150 games last season, Santana batted .238/.328/.420/.749.

That’s one more first base option off the board with Pete Alonso still available.

According to ESPN’s Passan, the Diamondbacks have acquired first baseman Josh Naylor from the Guardians in exchange for RHP Slade Cecconi and a competitive balance Round B draft pick. In 563 at-bats last season, Naylor slashed .243/.320/.456/.776. Cecconi recorded a 6.66 ERA over 77 innings.

According to the NY Post’s Jon Heyman, the Tigers have signed lefty reliever Matt Gage to a minor league deal with an invite to big league spring training. Over 6 2/3 innings last season, Gage recorded a 2.70 ERA.
