Senior Spurs man has stepped up in key man’s absence

Guglielmo Vicario is currently out with a long-term injury at Spurs. While Fraser Forster had impressed everyone with the way he deputised for the Italian, his performance against Man United left a lot to be desired.

The 36-year-old might be in the twilight of his career, but he has proven that he still has what it takes to play at the highest level, having come up with a lot of crucial saves over recent weeks. The only question mark remains over whether he is a good enough passer to play under Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham do not have a reliable backup to Forster at the moment, which is why some sources have suggested that the Lilywhites could look to bring a young, English goalkeeper through the door from the EFL next month.

Mick Brown on Tottenham’s goalkeeping situation

Brown believes that Spurs are on the lookout for a long-term goalkeeping option, given that Forster is now getting on in age.

The former Tottenham scout, who is still well connected at the club, insisted that it is a position that Ange Postecoglou‘s men will prioritise strengthening in January, along with central defence.

When asked about Tottenham’s goalkeeping situation, Brown told Football Insider: “It looks like being something they’ll prioritise in January. I think there are probably more important positions to address, like signing a new centre-back, but that’s something they want to do.

“All of Tottenham’s struggles so far this season have come down to their defensive issues, and I’d include the goalkeeper in that. They can go out and beat you 5-0, but they could just as easily lose 5-0.

“So they’re going to focus on improving their defensive options and the defensive unit as a whole, perhaps more in terms of depth than in the first team.

“The goalkeeper is very much a part of that because with Vicario out and Forster getting on a bit, they’ll be made to think about the long-term future of the position.”

Tottenham’s decision may depend on Vicario’s recovery

Tottenham’s decision on whether to add another goalkeeper to their squad in the upcoming transfer window may depend on Vicario‘s progress over the coming weeks.

It was previously reported that the Italian is expected to be out of action until February.

If the 28-year-old looks like he might return at the start of February, Spurs may be tempted to persevere with just Forster until then and re-assess the situation at the end of the season.
