Pakistan PM forms committee to open dialogue with Imran Khan’s PTI following protests
Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, has formed a committee for dialogue with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. The confrontation between PTI and the ruling coalition government led by Shehbaz Sharif reached its peak after the protests on November 25, which resulted in dozens of casualties.
Pakistani media have reported that this committee was formed at the suggestion and mediation of Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan.
Geo News reported on Sunday, December 22, that among the members of the committee are Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Prime Minister’s Political Advisor Rana Sanaullah.
A few weeks earlier, Imran Khan, the leader of PTI, had formed a three-member committee led by Gohar Ali Khan, the president of PTI, and Ali Amin Gandapur, the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to negotiate with the government.
The committees of both PTI and the ruling coalition are scheduled to meet for the first time on Monday, December 23 for a dialogue session hosted by Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan.
During the protests in Islamabad, dozens, including PTI supporters and Pakistani security forces, were killed or wounded, and hundreds of PTI supporters were arrested.
In the aftermath, Imran Khan announced December 6 that if the government did not address the demands of the party by the December 22, PTI would initiate the first phase of civil disobedience.
The creation of this committee marks an important step toward addressing the political unrest in Pakistan. Both parties, PTI and the ruling coalition, will have to navigate their differences to avoid further escalation.
With tensions running high, the outcome of these discussions could significantly impact the political landscape of Pakistan, especially considering the consequences of any failure to reach an agreement. The public and political leaders are closely watching the developments in hopes of resolving the ongoing crisis peacefully.
