Athletics 2024 Season in Review: JT Ginn
2025 may be the year he breaks into the rotation
Athletics 2024 Season in Review: JT Ginn
John Thomas (J.T.) Ginn was drafted by the New York Mets in 2020 out of Mississippi State University. He is a former member of the Team USA 18U squad.
How was he acquired?
On March 12, 2022, the New York Mets traded RHP Adam Oller and RHP J.T. Ginn to the Oakland Athletics for RHP Chris Bassitt. Ginn was immediately assigned to the Midland Rockhounds of the Texas League.
What were the expectations?
In 2018, Ginn was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Mississippi. He played one Year at Mississippi State and in his second year drafted, signed with Mets. All expectations were for J.T. to be a top-tier starter for the major league club.
2024 Results
Ginn made his major league debut with the Athletics on August 21, 2024. He started six games and pitched in eight all together. He finished with a 1-1 record with a 4.24 ERA and twenty-nine strikeouts in thirty-four innings. J.T. will hold a spot in A’s history as the winning pitcher for the team’s final victory at the Oakland Coliseum on September 26, 2024.
2025 Outlook
Ginn may start the year in the minors. But, despite the addition of Luis Severino, J.T. will likely get a legitimate shot at making the starting rotation at some point in 2025. He retains his rookie status, despite debuting in 2024.
