'Spitting on the graves': GOP senator melts down over Biden commutations

President Joe Biden took 37 people off of death row over the weekend and Republicans are irate.

While Biden, a Catholic, has supported the death penalty, those on death row were remanded to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who has said he's pro-life, took to X on Monday, calling it "an abhorrent move by President Biden, but an entirely predictable one."

"This is a slap in the face of the victims, their families, and loved ones. He is commuting the sentences of cold-blooded killers and rapists. He is spitting on the graves of the victims by letting these criminals off easy," wrote Cruz.

The statement was remarkably similar to that of Donald Trump, whose spokesperson called it "this abhorrent decision by Joe Biden is a slap in the face to the victims."

The spokesperson said that "the rule of law ... will return when he is back in the White House," however, Trump has promised to pardon all of those involved in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. In his final days in office in 2021, Trump issued 74 pardons, many of whom were Republican allies, including Jared Kushner's father.

Former President Barack Obama issued 1,715 commutations in his final days of office for non-violent marijuana offenses.
