Jamie Carragher’s criticism of Ange Postecoglou

Carragher has been among the most vocal critics of Postecoglou over recent weeks, with the pundit insisting earlier this month that the Australian will not be in his job for too long if he does not tweak the way Spurs play depending on the opposition and state of the game.

Last week, the former Liverpool man even declared that the Spurs players should take matters into their own hands and be a little bit more defensive once they take a big lead in matches.

Postecoglou responded to the pundit’s criticism in his press conference last week, taking a rather diplomatic stance by insisting that he accepts the criticism levelled at him but insisting that he does not seek any validation from others and will not change his approach.

Carragher on Postecoglou’s future

Despite the criticism he has levelled at Postecoglou and his methods, Carragher has now declared that Tottenham should not consider sacking their head coach until the end of the season.

The 46-year-old pointed out that the style of football that Postecoglou has implemented has generally been well-received by the Spurs fan base.

When asked to rate the Tottenham boss’ tenure so far, Carragher said on the Echo of Glory podcast: “I think I’d be, for me, it would be almost like a seven out of 10 situation. I would imagine with the manager, but there are a couple of other things that you won’t. But you actually sit back and look at the bigger picture and think, you know what, we play attacking football.

“I keep going back to, ‘we’ve got our Tottenham back’ in some ways, because that felt like a lot of what you used to speak about when you had obviously, you had sort of three managers on the run who were pragmatic.

“Now they were imperfect, Ange isn’t perfect. And I think in some ways, I think there’s no way Ange should be losing his job at any stage this season, no matter what for me, because I think he had a really good first season.”

Daniel Levy will give a long rope to Postecoglou

Levy has gone down the route of appointing big-name managers with a track record of winning silverware and the decisions backfired spectacularly.

Now that the Spurs supremo has committed to a different, long-term approach, it would not make much sense to pull the plug on it at the first sign of trouble.
