American Airlines experiences 'technical issue' with all flights on Christmas Eve

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- American Airlines reportedly experienced delays on the morning of Christmas Eve due to what the airline called a "technical issue."

The Fort Worth-based international airline posted on X at 5:37 a.m. that it was "currently experiencing a technical issue with all American Airlines flights." The post was in response to a passenger reporting their plane, headed from St. Louis to Miami, was delayed.

In another reply, the airline said, "Our team is currently working to get this done. An estimated timeframe has not been provided, but they're trying to fix it in the shortest possible time."

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop for all American Airlines flights early Tuesday morning but it was later canceled.

The website DownDetector, which tracks issues and outages, showed a spike in outage reports related to American Airlines Tuesday morning starting around 5 a.m. An update shortly after 6 a.m. showed just over 2,000 reports about the airline.

In an update at 6:45 a.m., the website showed fewer than 400 reports related to the airline.

A public information officer at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport told KXAN reporter Barrett Tryon that staff was "hearing the issue is resolved."

At AUS, there were no flight cancellations, four flights that were delayed by more than an hour, eight total delayed departing flights, and two delayed arriving flights.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
