Gunmen attack Indian Consulate employees in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan

A source told Khaama Press that unidentified gunmen attacked an Afghan employee at the Indian Consulate in the fourth district of Jalalabad city, Nangarhar eastern province of Afghanistan.

Hamad, the spokesperson for Nangarhar’s police headquarters, reported that the injured employee’s name is Dawood Shirzad, and he works as translator in the Indian Consulate in the province.

Hamad also confirmed that the consulate employee was injured in the attack.

This incident occurred this evening, Tuesday, 24th of December 2024. He stated that no one has been arrested in connection with the incident so far, and investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, another source told Khaama Press that the gunmen attacked the vehicle of Indian Consulate Afghan employees. The driver was killed in the assault, while the employee, identified as Dawood, was injured.

The injured employee has been transferred to Nangarhar Regional Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.

The Indian embassy and consulates were closed in August 2021 following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. In June 2022, India resumed its diplomatic presence in Afghanistan by sending a “Technical Team” with humanitarian aid to its embassy.

The embassy has been actively involved in providing humanitarian assistance and supporting Afghan citizens. The safety and well-being of Indian diplomatic personnel remain a top priority as the embassy navigates the complexities of operating in a volatile situation in the country.
