Kyler Gordon Sounds Like He Already Wants Out Of Chicago

Losing consistently has a bad way of warping the minds of young athletes. When it happens so often, you learn to accept it. That is a dangerous way to live out your career. Kyler Gordon has endured some of the worst Chicago Bears football in franchise history. He was part of their longest losing streak ever (14 games) and is now part of their second-longest (9 games), which still isn’t over. The young cornerback came from a successful program at Washington, known for its winning tradition.

What he’s dealt with over the past three years has made him realize how daunting it can be to maintain your edge in tough times. Gordon spoke to Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times about the Bears’ bleak trudge to the finish line this season. He sounded like somebody who’d much rather be on another team.

“I’m so young, and this is the most athletic I’m ever going to be, and it’s disappointing to have your prime years be like this,” cornerback Kyler Gordon told the Sun-Times. “I’m still in good spirits. I’m thankful I’m still here. But definitely disappointed.”

Kyler Gordon faces a tough internal challenge.

There are no easy fixes for the Bears’ problems. They need a complete revamping of their leadership. A new coaching staff will be hired sometime in the next two months. Their assessment of the roster could end up causing a ripple effect of changes. While Kyler Gordon might’ve been a 2nd round pick and is a good player, his place in the pecking order is far from secure. Health has been an ongoing issue for him at times, and he hasn’t forced a turnover in a long time. Gordon has tremendous versatility and still has so much room to grow. However, it seems the losing is chipping away at his ability to focus.

Next season will be decisive for him as he prepares for his all-important push for a second contract. His development is crucial for the Bears, as Tyrique Stevenson took a massive step back this season. Having two dependable corners would at least keep the secondary strong as the team aims to reshape the defense.
