A new video released by ITV bosses shows the exact moment the director yelled ‘cut’ on Helen’s final scenes as her on-screen family gathered around her in the Platt house.
When Helen, 73, realised crowds of cast and crew were growing behind the cameras to see her off, she broke down in tears.
Soap execs had stood down filming for the rest of the show on the day for the special moment.
Addressing them all, Helen said through a cracked voice: “The reason I’ve been here all these years, and it’s a lot of years, It’s more than I can think about really, Is because of all of you people that have been here for, well, some of you for all of those fifty years and others for half of that time.
“But I couldn’t have done any of it without you. I really couldn’t. You are the most amazing team of people, and I really do say thank you.
“And as for this lot, who didn’t tell me (about this). Oh God, I love them so much.
“I don’t quite know what I’m going to do without you. But thank you for everything.”
Coronation Street bosses had recently been accused of ‘disrespect’ towards Helen by furious fans.
Originally, it had been announced that Gail’s final episode would be kept off streaming platform ITVX in order for fans to all tune in to the linear TV broadcast that evening.
However, Corrie execs completed a U-turn and decided to release Gail’s final ever appearance early at 7am.
It meant that there was a huge chance that her final exit was ruined for many fans that chose t watch the episode as it goes went out on TV.
