City of OKC reminds residents not to call 911 for illegal fireworks on New Year's Eve

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - The City of Oklahoma City is reminding residents to leave 911 phone lines clear for emergencies on New Year's Eve

According to City of OKC, 911 phone lines should be clear for those experiencing life-threatening emergencies.

“Complaints about fireworks overload 911 phone lines and can keep people experiencing an emergency from quickly connecting with a dispatcher,” Fire Chief Richard Kelley said.

Residents are asked to call the Fireworks Hotline at 405-297-2222 between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. on December 31. An address is required to report a violation. Residents may also email a complaint to action.center@okc.gov or text 405-252-1053.

Officials say it is against the law to buy, sell or use fireworks in Oklahoma City. Also included are sparklers, snakes, bottle rockets and all other common fireworks on both private and public property.

“Fireworks are a serious safety hazard to people and property and should be left to professional shows,” Chief Kelley added.

The City says violators are subject to a $500 fine, confiscation of fireworks and a possible jail sentence.
