Stewart's slowly reintroducing tap-to-pay

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Stewart's Shops is slowly reintroducing the tap-to-pay option to stores, per Stewart's Shops spokesperson Robin Cooper. About half of the stores already have it back.

The stores halted the tap-to-pay option back in October due to fraudulent credit card payments. They first noticed the fraudulent activity on Oct. 19 and quickly took action, according to a representative from Stewart’s. The scammers would use the fake card information to purchase cigarettes and alcohol; the machine would approve the transaction, but no money was ever exchanged, a Stewart's representative said.

Cooper said all stores should have tap-to-pay back by the end of January and that the shop's vendor implemented a patch to their system to eliminate fraud concerns. Customer information was never in jeopardy when the fraud concerns popped up.
