'Wicked' stars announce movie's digital release date: 'Sing your heart out'

(WGN) – Can't wait for "Wicked" to work its way to the VOD market? The release date may defy expectations — coming a lot sooner than fans may have expected.

"Wicked," the mega musical movie of the season, will be available for digital purchase or rental on December 31.

Universal Pictures, as well as the movie's stars, made the announcement Thursday online and on Instagram.

"Invite all your friends, because this one is going to be popular," Ariana Grande said in an Instagram clip.

"Sing your heart out in the comfort of your home," Cynthia Erivo added, perhaps acknowledging earlier reports that fans were out-singing the soundtrack at screenings.

Universal Pictures lists Apple TV, YouTube and Amazon Prime among the places where "Wicked" will be available to stream or purchase.

The film, an adaptation of the Tony-winning musical (which itself was inspired by a 1995 book), has become a hit with viewers and critics since its November release. Grande and Erivo have also both been nominated for Golden Globes, and the film itself has been shortlisted for the Oscars.
