Fundraiser to benefit 73-year-old zydeco legend after theft

(KLFY) -- Just a few weeks ago, Donna Angelle was recognized by the city of St. Martinville for her contribution to zydeco music. But now she's in need after recently becoming a victim of theft.

Angelle said having to start completely over at 73 years old is hard. Especially when all she has to rely on for income is her music.

Angelle said her purse, which contained her wallet with her personal information, was taken after she left it on a counter at a store. When she got into her vehicle, she noticed her purse was missing.

"They had everything, social security cards, and driver's license," she said.

Angelle said she had to close her bank account and start completely over and get new information. Every time funds were deposited, she said a purchase not made by her was made.

Right now, her source of income comes from her music, she said.

"I'm living off of what I do, my playing. I'm not gonna lie to you, it's hard right now."

Mary Chevalier, with Pillows of Hope, said when she heard what happened to Angelle, she immediately she wanted to help.

"Ms. Donna Angelle has always been a great person to donate her time and do things that, are important in the community and it came to me that she was really in need of some help."

Chevalier said she and the ladies of Pillows of Hope decided to "give her a fundraiser to help her out, to get her back on her feet."

The fundraiser will be held at the Brass Room on Sunday, Dec. 29 at 2 p.m.

There will be live bands, food, and A $15 cover charge to help Angelle during her time in need.

Angelle said she's "so grateful for Ms. Mary and Pillows of Hope," for putting on the fundraiser for her.
