Today marks the birthday of Dhirubhai Ambani, the founder of Reliance Industries and father of its current chairman Mukesh Ambani. Dhirubhai Ambani, known for creating one of the world’s largest companies, had a favorite car brand: Cadillac. He owned a 1958 Cadillac sedan, a left-hand drive vehicle since it was a US-made brand.
In the 1960s, Cadillac cars, manufactured by General Motors, were highly sought after. The 1958 sedan model included three popular versions: Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac CTS, and Cadillac STS. General Motors has been producing Cadillac cars as a luxury brand since 1902. As Cadillac was not sold in India, Dhirubhai Ambani imported the car for personal use.
Reports suggest that the 1958 model was priced at Rs 45 lakh (ex-showroom) before production stopped. It featured a 3249 CC 4-cylinder engine, a 65-litre fuel tank, and delivered a mileage of 14 km/l on highways and 11 km/l in cities. The car was considered luxurious for its time and even came equipped with power steering, a rare feature back then.
