India vs Australia 2024-25: Rohit Sharma’s Test career in question? Chief selector Ajit Agarkar to have key discussion

New Delhi: According to a report by PTI, Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, is currently in Melbourne and is expected to have a conversation with Rohit Sharma. The report suggests that if India fails to qualify for the 2025 World Test Championship final, the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar series in Sydney could mark Rohit Sharma’s final appearance in red-ball cricket.

India is currently facing Australia in the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Rohit Sharma, returning to open the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal, had previously batted at No. 6 since his return in the second Test. However, his dismal form continued, as he was dismissed for just 3 runs off 5 deliveries. With only 19 runs in the series so far, there is growing speculation that Rohit Sharma’s Test career may be nearing its end. According to a report, this could very well become a reality.

According to a report by news agency PTI, the chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, is currently in Melbourne and may discuss Rohit Sharma’s future in Test cricket. This follows the India captain’s disappointing performance, having scored just 155 runs from 8 Tests at an average of 11.07.

The report also suggests that if India fails to qualify for the World Test Championship 2025 final, the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar series in Sydney could mark Rohit Sharma’s final appearance in red-ball cricket.

Rohit Sharma Felt Uncomfortable Batting In Middle Order

According to the PTI report, Rohit Sharma struggled to bat in the middle order during the second and third Tests, which led to Shubman Gill being dropped to accommodate him as an opener. Despite KL Rahul being the top run-scorer for India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024, Rohit replaced him at the top of the order. However, his stay was short-lived as he was dismissed for just 5 runs after top-edging a short ball from Pat Cummins, which landed straight into Scott Boland’s hands.
