Shoppers fume ‘Christmas isn’t even over yet’ as Easter Eggs appear on shelves
Christmas decorations are barely down and the New Year hasn’t arrived, but already supermarkets are stocking shelves with Easter Eggs.
Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, B&M and Co-op have all been caught jumping the gun with the themed treats on sale in their stores.
‘Jesus hasn’t even been born yet and Sainsbury’s is already out her celebrating his death’, J Hingle posted on X on December 24.
Since then there’s been a slew of posts on social media from shoppers outraged at their favourite store’s faux pas.
From Maltesers, Milky Bars and Mini Eggs, to Galaxy Kit Kat and Terry’s Chocolate Orange, the eggs are out in force, well before Easter falls on April 20.
‘This is consumerism at its best, not even 2025 yet ffs’, one social media user posted.
Jamie Spilsbury said: ‘A bloody joke more like! Who’s gonna be assed about Easter eggs when it’s several months away? Not mention hardly anyone will be able to afford much at the start of the new year, not long after Christmas.
Christopher K said: ‘Maybe they should they should concentrate on getting Christmas right for their customers before they try to cash in on the next Christian festival, in four months time.’
Another said: ‘Disgusting.’
One Metro reader got in touch to say: ‘I went to Morrisons yesterday for milk and could not believe that already on display were Easter eggs. It was only 28th December and we have not had New Year’s celebrations yet. What is wrong with supermarkets and their logic.’
Even shop staff are riled up by the roll-out. One posted with a crying emoji: ‘Oh the joys of retail. This cage came in on today’s delivery. Yes those are EASTER EGGS.’
It’s not just New Year’s Eve and, in some cases, Christmas they seem to be skipping.
Valentine’s Day isn’t even nearly upon us, which might make you ask where they’ll be stocking the heart-shaped chocolate when time comes around.
But maybe we shouldn’t be too disturbed by how early the Easter Eggs have appeared.
Broadcaster and TV critic Scott Bryan said: ‘I remember restocking christmas shelves with easter eggs on boxing day when I worked in retail. it was back in 2005, so it’s nothing new.’
Another social media user said: ‘If people didn’t buy them at this time of year the shops wouldn’t stock them, shops don’t take up shelf space with non’selling lines so the question to ask is not why are shops selling them but why are people wanting to buy them.’
Metro has contacted Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, B&M and Co-op for comment.
