NFL Insider ‘Wouldn’t Be Surprised’ If Patriots Make Run For Star Wideout
The Patriots flamed out in free agency last offseason but have a chance to fix their mistakes next offseason.
New England failed to sign Calvin Ridley and was denied by Brandon Aiyuk last offseason. The lack of big signings was an obvious disappointment but also meant the Patriots would have plenty of cap space to utilize on a free agent.
All eyes will be on Tee Higgins, who recently hired the same agent as Ja’Marr Chase. It’s unknown what effect that will have on the Cincinnati Bengals’ chances to re-sign the star wideout. However, NFL Media’s Mike Garofolo said on “The Insiders” on Saturday that he “wouldn’t be surprised” if New England tried to make a run at Higgins if he does enter free agency.
The Patriots desperately need a No. 1 wide receiver to pair with Drake Maye, and Higgins would be an ideal fit. Kendrick Bourne this week sent a recruiting pitch to the wideout, so there’s plenty of motivation to add talent to the team.
Of course, New England will face competition for the 25-year-old’s services. It will depend on how important finances are to Higgins and how much he believes in Maye and Jerod Mayo’s vision.
