Weather experts predict a week of heavy snow and rain for Afghanistan

Written By: Tabasum Nasiry

Afghanistan is expected to experience widespread rainfall and snowfall this week, ending months of drought across the country.

Most parts of Afghanistan have not seen any rainfall since the fall season, and other regions of the country have experienced very little precipitation. However, weather and broadcasting experts suggest that the ongoing drought will be broken this week with heavy snowfall and rainfall.

Najibullah Sadiq, a well-known expert in Afghanistan’s water resource management, stated, “A good wave of rain is on its way.” On Sunday, December 29, Sadiq posted on his Facebook page that various regions of Afghanistan would begin experiencing rainfall starting Tuesday, December 31.

The map shared by Sadid shows the movement of air masses, which are advancing from Central Asia in the north and northeast toward Afghanistan. The first air masses, carrying snow and rain, are expected to arrive in Afghanistan on Tuesday.

Thus, the “good wave of rain” will begin on Tuesday across Afghanistan, continuing through Friday and Saturday. The map illustrating the movement of air masses indicates that almost all regions of Afghanistan will experience significant rainfall on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

The amount of rainfall is expected to range from 20 to 30 millimeters in central and southern Afghanistan, while other parts of the country will receive between 2 to 10 millimeters of rain.

This expected rainfall is a much-needed relief for Afghanistan, where drought conditions have severely affected agriculture and water supplies. If the forecast holds true, it could help alleviate some of the hardship faced by farmers and communities across the country.

However, continued monitoring and preparation will be essential to ensure that the rainfall does not lead to flooding, particularly in areas that are not accustomed to such heavy precipitation. The government and aid organizations must be prepared to provide support to affected populations to prevent further damage and displacement.
