Five ways to avoid salon prices and style your hair at home for New Year’s bash
PLANNING a New Year’s bash but got no cash to get your hair styled?
Skip high salon prices and create fabulous party hair at home.
SOCK SAVER: Say goodbye to expensive curling wands and check your sock drawer instead.
Take small sections of damp hair, wrap them around clean socks, and tie the ends in a loose knot.
Leave them overnight or use a hairdryer on a low heat over the socks for quicker results. When you unroll, you’ll have soft, bouncy curls perfect for New Year’s Eve.
PLAIT ATTACK: For effortless waves, spritz your hair with water or a light styling spray, then braid it into three plaits. Gently blow-dry your plaits if you’re in a hurry, or let them dry naturally.
Undo the plaits, run your fingers through the waves, and finish by flipping your hair over your head and spritzing with hairspray to lock in a big wavy look.
SPRITZ ‘N’ GO: Want beachy, textured hair? Skip the pricey products and make your own salt spray at home. Mix a teaspoon of salt with warm water and a dash of conditioner in a spray bottle.
Shake well then lightly spritz on to damp hair, scrunch with your hands and let it air-dry for an effortlessly tousled look.
This spray also works really well on short hair — simply spritz on to a hairbrush before brushing through hair for a style that will stay put.
LOCKS GREAT: Transform a simple ponytail into a party-ready style by tying it high, then take a small section of the ponytail, wrap it around the hairband to hide it, and secure it with a hair grip.
Use straighteners to flick the ends out or add curls for a polished finish. To add volume, tease the crown with a comb before tying.
ALL TIED UP: Recycle ribbon from Christmas gifts to add a festive bow to your look, either as part of a half-up, half-down style or tied on to a ponytail — it’s very on trend.
You can also use hair grips to pin festive earrings to your hair to add NYE sparkle if you’re going all out.
