Chennedy Carter’s future in the WNBA is uncertain

Carter had an excellent season on the Sky in 2024, averaging 17.5 points on 48.7 percent shooting. But this winter, she’s a restricted free agent who will be able to begin negotiations with WNBA teams, and her future with the Sky is unclear.

Chicago’s new head coach, Tyler Marsh, was asked on The Athletic Women’s Basketball Show about whether Carter was a big part of the Sky’s plans.

“In regards to Chennedy, she’s a great player, she was a huge catalyst to what last year’s team was able to do and accomplish,” Marsh said. “And obviously, she’s slated to be a free agent this year. So once those talks open up, we’ll take a look at it. But the focus thus far has been on the players who we know are under contract this coming year, and that’s where the communication has been thus far.”

Regardless, Carter has been proving her on-court value with her consistent play since the WNBA season’s conclusion.

There’s been a bump in the road for the Wuhan star, however. Last week, Carter suffered a sternum contusion that led to her hospitalization, an injury that typically takes a couple of weeks to recover from.
